We’re all familiar with that statement. A place, product, or event is touted as being something special, but in reality, you’ve taken it in the shorts.
Jesus warned his followers, “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves” (KJV Matthew 7:15). The direct example, of course, is that Jesus is the shepherd, we are His flock,-- His sheep. Wolves and sheep obviously are not on friendly terms.
Jesus was warning His disciples about those who would lead them astray and who looked good on the surface but in the end, would lead them to destruction. As with so many other Biblical examples, I see this comparison with our daily lives, society, and governments.
When the federal government instituted the Progressive Income Tax in 1913, it also instituted withholding the employee’s taxes from their wages. Employers protested loudly over the additional work this caused, and it was stopped in 1917. When Social Security was instituted in the 1930s, that was deducted from wages, but taxes were paid quarterly by the taxpayer.
During WWII, a cash strapped government instituted federal withholding again. Social Security was “sold” to us as this painless way to secure our future in our twilight years. Withholding was sold to us-- it would be easier on us to not have to send quarterly payments. The tax, itself, was presented as a tax on a very few rich people. As we see, Social Security is, in reality, a Ponzi Scheme perpetrated on us by our government, and withholding has the government holding and using our money interest-free...how’s that working out for us?
After WWI, the Ottoman empire was broken up and a “line in the sand” was drawn by England and France-- Sykes-Picot. It was “sold” as being in the best interest of the people, but in reality, it was to preserve the shipping and trade routes for the West. It served the purpose of the West to divide the area up in such a way as to keep infighting going between the various factions, and thus they would not gather into a caliphate again.
Saddam Hussein, The Shah of Iran, and Bashar al-Assad are a few leaders placed by the West...how have they worked out? We supported what became al-Qaeda against the Russians in Afghanistan. We, (the West), are either the worst judges of character and never learn from our mistakes, or the mistakes are not really mistakes but intentional steps to keep the turmoil in place. People fighting among themselves are not able to unite to fight us. Keep that in mind when you see the US arming “rebels.”
Civil Asset Forfeiture and the ability of the IRS to seize property without due process were sold to us as a tool to fight the mafia, drug cartels, and other criminals. However, there are many examples of this power being abused. As with any power, abuse comes easy, even in Texas. The Patriot Act was passed ostensibly to keep us safe from terror. One part regulates deposits to banks of $10,000 and more. Yet, if you have a business and make deposits close to but under $10,000, you still are under suspicion. An elderly immigrant couple recently lost their entire business to the IRS.
The proponents of Artificial Intelligence (AI) will tell of this wonderful world that will exist when self-learning and thinking machines will do all the labor so most of us can take it easy. However, Elon Musk recently warned that AI would be an existential risk and that it could lead to the extinction of humans.
VISA recently began offering businesses a cash bonus to go cashless and use only debit and credit cards. They will reap huge financial rewards as they get a percentage of each transaction. We’re talking billions of dollars. This, of course, is sold to us as a good thing, you don’t have to carry cash or checks, and it’s easy to track your spending and so on.
This plays along with the Federal Reserve's stated plan to move away from cash. Cash and checks cost banks to handle; they make money when money is digitized. It will be sold to you as a convenience, but make no mistake about it, money and control are the goals. Imagine a failure of the grid, either due to a storm, or terror, or other influence. Access to your funds will be shut off. If the government deems it necessary, they could shut off or restrict your access.
Jesus told another parable in Luke 12:16-20 (NIV):
16 And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. 17 He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’”
18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’
20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’
This was certainly a spiritual warning, but we can learn from our daily lives as well. Don’t take things for granted, and don’t assume that because things look good that they are. When Jesus warned of wolves in sheep’s clothing, he was directly talking about the religious leaders of the day. The government has become our religious leaders, and if you think they have your best interest at heart, I have oceanfront property in Kansas I’d like to sell.
It’s time to wake up and stop worrying about all the peripheral issues and look instead at the root causes. Government is doing things not granted in the powers of the Constitution. We have left our “first love” of liberty and given it over to politicians for safe keeping. Nothing will change until we change.
